A huge proportion of my clients come to see me after having had therapy before. The Often found their previous treatment somewhat helpful but there are some things that linger and remain unresolved.
What Might Have Been Missing.
Someone Else Was Telling You What To Do
When changes occur as a result of someone else telling you what to do the behaviour is not motivated by your internal knowledge and desire. They aren’t your changes or decisions; they are someone else’s. When the direction come from an external source it doesn’t get integrated in the same way that it would if you were the one who was carefully and thoughtfully deciding what was right for you in that moment.
It Focuses On Symptoms Rather Than The Cause Of Them
Symptoms are the tip of the iceberg. When treatment focuses on the tip it doesn’t address what is happening underneath the water so a lot remains unresolved. It also means that difficulties may re-emerge again because the underlying causes having been examined and considered.
You Didn’t Get To Talk About Everything You Needed To
When therapy is focused on symptom reduction the content of the sessions becomes limited. A lot of sensitive topics take time and space to explore and unpack. When allowing space is not encouraged you may feel like you have not been able to discuss everything you felt you needed.
It Focused Too Heavily On Thoughts
Some approaches propose that the answer to relieving suffering is to change your thinking. A limitation of this is that it neglects so many other components of the human experience. There is no space to consider your relationship with your self, emotions that don’t follow from conscious logic or experiences that don’t need to be changed; they simply need to be understood.
The Goal Was To Change Not To Understand.
Not everything that is painful necessarily needs to be changed. Many painful experiences need to understood and explored. When they can be processed and thought about they may become less painful and you might find space for them in your life.
What To Expect When Working With Me.
I Want To Help You To Find The Answers Rather Than Tell You What To Do.
I want you to determine the changes you want to make and how you want your life to be. I want you to find a way to making changes that feels authentic and nurturing not harsh and punitive. I don’t think it’s my job to tell you how you to change but I am here to help you forge your own path on this journey.
We Explore How Your Difficulties Have Developed Over Time.
Rather than simply trying to reduce symptoms, therapy becomes a space where we understand and make meaning of your experiences. We look back to understand where things have come from and how they have been shaped over time. This allows you to develop a deep understanding of your suffering rather than just managing the symptoms.
It Is Slow And I’m Curious About ANYTHING You Want To Talk About.
Therapy is a space where you can talk about whatever you want to and you can take as long as you need. I want to deeply listen to what you are saying and help you try to make sense of your experiences. I’m not going to rush you or tell you what you need to talk about in your sessions. Nothing is off limits.
We Explore Thoughts, Emotions, Fantasies, Relationships And The Unconscious
Thoughts are one part of your experience but they are definitely not the only part or even the most important. There is so much more depth and nuance to human experience than just our thoughts. Therapy is a place where you can give attention to all your human experiences including the ones that don’t make sense.
You Can Change But You Don’t Have To.
Often the suffering we experience is trying to communicate something to us and instead of changing we need to listen to it and try to learn something about it. There might be things you want to change in your life. The might also be things that you just want to talk through and understand a bit better.
